Our story

Three generations on one farm

Hartwell is a mixed farm on the edge of the Chilterns. Ruth Hartwell’s parents sold eggs from a table at the gate in 1987.

The table became a barn, and the barn became the shop. Ruth and her son Ben run it now, with a team of twelve.

We still farm. The vegetables, lamb, eggs and honey in the shop come from these fields.

If we would not put it on our own table, it does not go on the shelf.

How we source

How we source

From the field to the shelf, usually the same day

We keep the chain short, so you know where everything came from.

  1. Step 1: Grown or raised here

Vegetables, lamb, eggs and honey come from our own fields, pond and hives.

  2. Step 2: Bought from neighbours

What we do not grow, we buy from 34 producers within 20 miles. We visit every one.

  3. Step 3: On the shelf the same day

Most produce is picked in the morning and on the shelf by lunchtime. Each label says where it came from.

Two of our own

  • Three wooden beehives on the grass in front of a hedge.

    On the farm

    Honey from the orchard hives

Eight hives at the top of the orchard. The first jars of the year sell out in a week.

  • A duck on the farm pond.

    On the farm

    Duck eggs from the pond

Laid by the ducks on the farm pond. Larger than hen eggs, and very good in cake.
